THE SECRET TO SUCCESS AS A PHOTOGRAPHER

Being successful as a photographer or at least as a people photographer or really successful at any job involving person to person interaction is really a simple matter of being well a good person. Yep it can be that easy. Yes you have to be able to get the shot so you have to be technically capable that's a given, BUT it takes allot more than that. For the commercial work that I do often we are not working with models but most often we are working with the staff of the company and the executives etc. we have an assignment with. Now do you think getting the shot is easy. Well yes and no, yes because the easiest way to do it is to be honest be friendly and make a friend. And no because no-one for the most part wants to be photographed at work and when they have been told they have no choice. (preferably by the higher ups BEFORE you arrive) they really don’t want to but they will do it. That is they will stand there stiff as a board and smile an awkward smile Now that makes for a great image right!!! This is where being easy going friendly and honest helps, simply put take a few minutes to get to know the people you are working with become an honest friend sympathize with what they are going through and hopefully get them to sympathize with you that your getting the shot and having a successful shoot is as dependent on them as your knowledge of how the camera works. Give them a reason to take pride in the image if not for the company then maybe for the new friend they have made and just met.

The best part to this way of working is I have many many new friends that I have made this way. We often keep up on FB / IG, Linkdin and the like and whenever I am in the area I make every effort to stop and say hi. The added bonus to getting the shot making a friend and the above is we now have someone that can help us in a pinch, I just had this happen in Norfolk VA on a shoot for Geico a last minute assignment for their publication with a super fast turn time. I got lucky on the weather and because I had made friend at the local airport FBO I had a place to go pull out my laptop do our post and send the images to the art director in a nice quite spot. Saved my but and helped me impress another client what more can you ask for.

In the end it is simple be nice have fun make friends and work hard and it is amazing how lucky you can be.
